black hound new york bakery

Black Hound New York. You've seen their treats in the bakery section of Dean & Deluca. They don't get credit for their cute ganache enrobed chocolate cake with bees made of marzipan and sliced almond wings or their vanilla cake with red marzipan flowers at D&D but that's who makes it. And now that you know, you should go to their bakery because they have a lot more than what Dean & Deluca buys from them.

Black Hound New York has been around since 1988 so it's safe to say, they've been making customers happy for a long time. They make simple, elegant and tasty 9 to 10-inch cakes as well as little 3-inch cakes, which I prefer. For a gift or party, I like getting a variety, like getting cake tapas, since it's so hard to choose just one cake from all the different design and flavor options. A 3-inch cake can easily be cut into 4 small but generous pieces, netting 2-3 bites per cut piece. They're known for their festive and elegant cakes but they also sell cookies, chocolates, cheese sticks, and confections.

We brought these four to my parents' this past weekend:

Orange Cheesecake: Made with cream cheese and mascarpone - the latter helping to yield a much lighter cheesecake - is infused with orange zest and juice. There are chocolate cake crumbs around the sides, and its base is made of the same crumbs. (A pretty clever use of leftover cake crumbs, no?)

Pear Almond: Three layers of almond cake filled with poached pears and Bavarian cream, finished with white buttercream and honey toasted almonds, and decorated on top with dried and glazed pear slices.

Strawberry and Cream: Three layers of vanilla cake filled with vanilla pastry cream, whipped cream and fresh strawberries, finished with white chocolate buttercream and vanilla cake crumbs around the sides, and decorated on top with fuchsia pink marzipan flowers.

Lotsaberry Tart: Vanilla pastry cream is tucked under an overflowing cap of mixed berries, all on top of a buttery shortbread cookie crust.

The verdict? Get thee to Black Hound New York Bakery!
