British Invasion: Myers of Keswick

To start this British Invasion series, I need to begin with Myers of Keswick, THE British expat grocery store, located in the West Village. It's been around since 1985 - ironically opening on July 4th of that year.

What I love about wandering around Myers of Keswick (pronounced MYurrs of Kehzik), is getting a glimpse into another culture; the flavor combinations, the names of products. The retail part isn't that big, maybe 400 square feet or so. So whatever they stock, it has to be significant. I suppose it's no different than any other retailer but since we're dealing with a particular demographic, there has to be a keen desire for that specific product. Take for example the can of Cullen skink. Never heard of it but if you're from Scotland, I bet you have and miss a home cooked version dearly. 

Another fabulous part of Myers, is that they also make fresh sausages and baked goods: British staples like bangers, Cumberland sausages, Cornish pasties, a myriad of meat pies and one of my favorites: the Scotch egg. The Scotch egg is a wondrous food item. It's a hard-boiled egg, wrapped in Cumberland sausage meat (pork, parsley, nutmeg, mace), breaded and deep fried. Mmm, MMM! Happy belly, for sure! 

I seriously didn't stage this: A sweet English bulldog was waiting outside for its owner when I was leaving.
