British Invasion: Branston Pickles

The first time I went to Tea & Sympathy and ordered a Welsh Rarebit, they asked if I wanted Branston pickle. Sure! I love pickles. What showed up was a jar of shiny brown gloopy stuff with chunks in it. Oof! Well, okay, I'll give it a try. Yeehaw, it's tasty! May I please have some more? If you read the ingredients, it's basically chutney - thus the chunks. But what it really tastes like to me is a thicker, heartier Worcestershire sauce. Now I can't get enough of it. I use it with all sorts of things, primarily British: Welsh Rarebit, Scotch eggs, Shepherd's Pie, and bangers. I've also topped my burgers with it; smeared some on thick slices of cheddar cheese and in lieu of jam, I spread it on toast. I imagine it would taste splendid on a buttery baked potato too. Don't judge; just get yourself a jar and a big spoon.

Branston pickles are available at Amazon and Myers of Keswick. I'd also check the international section of your supermarket.

For today's musical interlude, here's The Clash: Rock the Casbah. Now rock the weekend and see you Monday!
